Abstract
Du Gu-ji(725-777),Luoyang,Henan.He had great reputation from Tian-bao to Da-li period.People at that time regarded him as“the generation's master”.He as well as Li Hua was all be praised as the leader of the literary firmament.Du Gu-ji had associated with a great deal of literary men from Tian-bao to Da-li,such as Li Hua,Gao Shi,Cen Sen,Jia Zhi,Li Bai,Cui You-fu,Huang Fu-zeng,Huang Fu-ran,Liu Changqing,Zhang Ji,Qian Qi,Quan Gao,Wang Ji-you,Yu Ti,Li Jia-you and so on.He also fostered lots of excellent students, such as Liang Su,Cui Yuan-han,Zhu Ju-chuang,Chen Jing,Qi Kang,Gao Sen,Zhao Jing,Quan De-yu.It is thus clear that Du Gu-ji had great influence power and reputation at that time; however, the famous writer of Tang dynasty had been ignored for a long time—maybe it is partly due to the changing times and the change of personal aesthetic taste. But through the“fall”during his lifetime and after his death,we just have the chance to observe the popular aesthetic fashion and understand the new aesthetic trend of next time. The paper regarded Du Gu-ji as a special case, and tired to discuss that how was he turn to a people who is good at literature,Confucianism and executive ability.
In addition to“introduction”,the paper can be divided into five parts.Chapter 1 is an overview of Du Gu-ji's time.We tired to point out that the time is an important period of rethinking rebellion of An and Shi.Consequently, some Confucian intellectuals with a sense of responsibility insisted that Confucian thoughts must be performed to unite the people.Du Gu-ji is the representative of the special time.
Chapter 2 mainly discusses Du Gu-ji's extraction, lifetime and giving some additional remarks about his ideological system of Confucianism,Taoism and Buddhism.Du Gu-ji's extraction can retrospect to Dai bei aristocracy during the time of Han and Wei.But the aristocracy has been Chinesizing since Han dynasty, and converted into a characteristic aristocratic family of“literator-Confucianist”until Du gu-tong-li—Du Gu-ji's father.Although Confucianism is Du Gu-ji's predominant thinking, but he did not reject Taoism and Buddhism.Taoism is the final aim of his Confucianism, and Buddhism had been transformed by his Confucianism to a certain degree.
Chapter 3 explores Du Gu-ji's essays.Pi Ling collections includes 17-volume essays, and it supplies a rich collection of historical and cultural records.Du Gu-ji's writings memorial to the throne have substantial power which is based on full arguments; His prefaces ahead of poems and the narrations show up exquisite skills of narrating events and characters; His inscription on the tablet exhibit a characteristic of realistic writing; His elegiac address presents the theme of complaining the heavens and creating unparallel prose.Although people can not avoid talking about Han Yu and Liu Zong-yuan when discussing Du Gu-ji's position in history of literature, but the significance of Du Gu-ji makes him be attached more focuses.
Chapter 4 explores Du Gu-ji's poetries. The title of Du Gu-ji's poetry which are keen to narration embodied the interim characteristics from Sheng-Tang to Zhong-Tang.Some of his poetries has the characteristic of “creating poetry and using the technique of prose”,and pay more attention to the interest of narrating realistic life rather than poetry's flavor; He also has some poetries embodied the style of“Gao Gu”,and reacted against the style of gingerbread in Da Li consciously.
Chapter 5 mainly discusses the relationship of Du Gu-ji and“Classical literary movement”,and questions the viewpoint that regarding Du Gu-ji as“the pioneer of Classical literary movement”.Reviewing three prefaces which writing for his friends; we can find that he did not react against all kinds of parallel prose. In fact,he does oppose the extravagant style rather than the parallelism in form.Although he created many prose which narrating matters, describing people and presenting individual value of the intellectual, but these writings are in relation with“man's wake”actually. In another word, creating prose is a conclusion of unconscious choice, and also a natural development progress of literary history. So the natural Choice can not be expressed a“Movement”.
By today's view of literary history,Du Gu-ji maybe is not the most conspicuous in Tian Bao and Da Li.But we have to regard him as a lively case of persuasion in that time.
